ARTIST STATEMENTS

Title: Guerrilla Warfare

Media: Graphite and paper

Statement:

My piece "Guerrilla Warfare" was inspired by a downtown city with New York in the background. We can see a gorilla, King Kong, in the Empire state building. The graffiti in the background on a building shows how our reality is constantly being changed by others actions.

To do this piece i did a paper and pencil sketch using a two point perspective layout. I started with a basic diamond shape and laid out each building then added detail one by one. Lastly I added the fine details, gorilla, and graffiti.

Title: Ku, The God of War

Media: Clay

Statement:

The piece "Ku, The God of War" was inspired by Polynesian culture. The Polynesian God of war is "Ku". I wanred to capture the essence of their God by showing a tiki sculpture displaying his major aspects.

I started this piece with a slab of red clay and made a hollow cylinder. On this cylinder I slip and scored pieces to add three dimensional features. After this i carved details and added textures.

Title: Reflection

Media: Water color and Water color paper

Statement:

My piece "Reflection" is a water color and paper piece that was given inspiration by a Mountain in Washington State. The light gives the illusion of a reflection of a mountain. I like to think this as a metaphor as how humanity as a whole can learn from nature and "reflect" on themselves.

To execute this piece I started with my basic rough sketch which I then used a series on wet on wet techniques to blend colors and give the effect of varying distances. After this I used wet on dry techniques to do fine details in the piece.

Title: Dream Big

Media: Canvas, Spray paint, and Acrylic paint

Statement:

My piece "Dream Big" was inspired by infamous Martin Luther King Jr. This piece shows how Martin was a complex man made of simple ideas, displayed by the isometric portrait. The piece also shows his extreme and "colorful" ideas of dreaming big for his time.

I started my piece by sketching out the isometric outline of Dr.King which allowed me to paint in the shapes adding value where needed. After this i spray painted a neon colored background
